Challenge Destructive Brain Patterns

Teenagers can absolutely, positively replace destructive brain patterns. Using Brain Plasticity Principle II (Neuron bundles are changed by experience and need), teenagers can form more constructive thought patterns. An addict does not want to be stuck in a negative mood forever. A distraction that can shift the brain state into a more active mode benefits the brain’s overall functioning and improves self-esteem as a bonus. Here are several strategies:

Learning a New Skill or Ability

Although trying to convince someone who is in the depths of despair to concentrate on learning something new can be extremely difficult, this sort of distraction can be a soothing remedy. For example, I bought a wood flute that’s musically idiot-proof. Each note is tuned to play a lovely chord. I love to play this instrument for my patients because it always sounds good and never fails to create an air of transcendence. There are other instruments, aided by computer chips, which now work according to similar principles—and they sound great! If your teenager is stuck in emotional neutral, give them the gift of an idiot-proof musical instrument. Encourage him or her to start playing every day!
